The bus has 3″ of spray foam in the walls and ceilings, with 3″ of rigid foam board in the floor. There are 1865 watts of solar power on the roof, a composting toilet, 46 gallon freshwater tank, 20 gallon electric hot water heater, solar powered air conditioning, queen murphy bed that folds into a wall to reveal a work desk, and custom reclaimed kitchen/bath cabinetry throughout.
It is Charlie’s personal home and he has lived through sub-zero Colorado winters and sweltering 100 degree summer days. This is the bus that proved for me that bus life could be had without any compromises.
The QOP was finished 2015 and is a popular source of inspiration for many people converting school buses around the world. Featured in Multiple books and zillow features, the Queen of Peace will live on!
This great build started life as a Thomas Built body on a Freightliner FS65 chassis with the Mercedes MBE 906 engine. To that platform we added a comprehensive suite of energy and life-support systems to make this a 4 season, off-grid home on wheels, compete with subway tile accents, full swivel captains chairs, A/C, a luxurious shower, and reclaimed barnwood and walnut trim. The countertops are walnut butcher block and feature press-to-latch hardware on all cabinetry. It sleeps 4 comfortably and will keep you comfortable in any environment.
In 2016 we converted a 1994 AmTran into a mobile studio on wheels for HEC Studio. The bus started with an International DT466, Allison MT643, auto chains, air ride, and low miles.
We added over 1800 watts of solar to the roof, a full insulation package, kitchen, slide out chest freezer-turned-fridge, composting toilet and built in sewing machine to complete the build. Sarah makes her hats and sells them all around the country in Lucy, her custom bus. Make sure to check out her website, http://www.hecstudio.com, and follow her adventures on Instagram @hecstudio
Success Express is a 1998 Rear Engine Bluebird with the Cummins 8.3 and Allison MD3060. Complete with pass-through under bay storage, it is a full size 39 ft bus with an 18” roof raise. It features a Cubic wood stove, over 2000 watts of rooftop solar, a full-size bathroom with shower, vanity, and toilet, a raised bedroom, multi-purpose dining table/storage cabinet, and magnetic panels that conceal hidden storage areas. A bohemian loft apartment on wheels!
This former prison bus was built by an aspiring young family in South Texas. Chrome Yellow was happy to build several custom pieces of furniture, including a dressed-up toolbox complete with live edge maple top and convertible couch bed with seatbelts and storage underneath. We also designed and assisted in the install of the solar system and wiring of the bus. Complete with a children’s loft in the back and rear deck, this unique build looks and feels great anywhere
This bus started life as a Thomas Ford E450/Thomas 5 window short bus. This clever floor plan features a full wet bath, convertible couch, 760 watts of solar power, sleeps 4, and is ready for boondocking anywhere. Reclaimed wood accents the cabinetry with a river rock shower base and cedar shower trim.
Jupiter is a fully finished Ford short bus. Loaded with walnut and a sense of class, Jupiter is sure to impress any guest she’ll have over.
Conversion of a 2001 Ford E450/Bluebird 5 window short bus into an offgrid home on wheels for one human, two dogs, and a whole lotta style. 1245 watts of solar power, composting toilet, full galley, underbed garage and doghouse
“Rough Ins” are simply the blood and guts of a bus conversion.

Odds & Ends
We don’t only do full-builds and if there’s something you’d like to build that you’ve never seen before, share your dreams with us and we can make it happen. From custom, up-fitted toolboxes-turned cabinetry, to one-of-a-kind front doors, to school bus wiring removal and spray foam insulation, we do it all.
Designing and installing off-grid energy systems is one of our favorite challenges. We combine a passion for building science with advanced knowledge of solar systems, lithium-ion battery technology, hydronic heat, wood-stove best practices, and propane and diesel system design. Our goal is to get you living the way you imagine, anywhere you want to be.
